Whether you use recycled cardboard boxes, pack frozen goods or send sea freight off to a long trip with tough climatic conditions – you certainly know some challenges regarding durable and reliable carton sealing. A perfect solution for demanding applications are tapes with natural rubber adhesive. This adhesive technology dates back to the middle of the 19th century.

Natural rubber is made from latex, the milky sap of the tropical rubber tree. monta obtains this annually regrowing and natural raw material only from trusted suppliers in Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia, who ensure highest quality and compliance with social as well as sustainability standards. They plant rubber trees which need five to six years of growth until they are ready for the extraction of latex: In a certain angle the bark gets spirally cut, enabling the sap to pour through a drain and into collecting cups. To maintain sufficient water and nutrient supply for the trees, only half of the circumference is cut.

From latex to natural rubber
The latex of different trees is collected in huge tanks with an integrated stirrer from where it flows into long coagulation basins. By adding a mild acid, the latex is clotted. The generated spongy coagulum layer is deducted, squeezed and afterwards cleaned in a water quench and numerous corrugated washing mills. After the coagulum is grinded, the granulate is filled into a trolley with separating perforated plates and dried in a hot-air duct.

The dried natural rubber sinters, which means it densifies to unpressed blocks. These are homogenised, weighed and filled into a baler. Finally, the bales are packed and transported to our factory in Germany.

From natural rubber to natural rubber adhesive
To create our monta natural rubber adhesive to our own specific formulations, we first granulate the 35 kilogram weighing bales. Then we mix the granulate with resins, which are the other main component of our adhesives, and serve as tackifiers to make the adhesive sticky. We transform the dry ingredients into a liquid, workable state with the aid of solvents. These are later recovered by 98% and reused in the production process, following strict German environmental regulations. The finished adhesive is pumped into big reservoirs and later to our coating units where our self-adhesive tapes are manufactured.

Advantages of natural rubber adhesive
Tapes with natural rubber adhesive have a typical colour which resembles amber or honey. They ensure a durable and secure sealing, even on challenging surfaces such as dusty or recycled cardboards. Natural rubber has unique flow properties and encloses the cardboard fibres rather than simply wetting the surface. This results in a strong bond to the board and excellent initial tack, saving material, as usually only one layer of tape is required to securely seal the carton.

Furthermore, natural rubber based adhesive tapes are very humidity- and temperature-resistant which makes them perfect to use under adverse climatic conditions or for frozen goods. Due to their high shear strength, natural rubber based tapes ensure reliable transportation processes.

Depending on the formulation, they feature a particularly strong cohesion. This enables a residue-free removal of the specific tapes from certain materials which makes them perfect for surface protection use.

Due to all the characteristics mentioned above, natural rubber is a versatile and sustainable adhesive alternative. Check our product finder to identify the best adhesive tape for your intended use.
