A tape’s shear strength is important for a reliable carton seal. It can be tested by the shear strength test, which we conduct in our lab following strict standards, and as well by our practical shear strength demo.
The basic idea of the practical shear strength demo is similar to the shear strength test, while allowing a direct comparison of two different tapes and providing more immediate results. However, the findings are not as binding as those of the shear strength test since the practical shear strength demo is not conducted under standardized laboratory conditions. At monta, we perform it for example for training purposes.
In a first step of this stress test, two adhesive tape rolls are placed next to the test device. Their ends are applied onto a fixed piece of cardboard at the same time and with the same length. To simulate challenging shear forces, the bond between the tape and the substrate is put under strong tension by metal bolts. The time until the tape shears off the cardboard is measured. A long time span is an indicator for a high shear strength of the tape.
The test result is affected by numerous parameters such as adhesion force, cohesion, tack and carton quality. Overall, various tests show that our natural rubber adhesive tapes are exceptionally persevering. Have a look yourself:
