The base of this backing material is PP, short for polypropylene. When looking at PP films, there are mono-axially (MOPP) and bi-axially (BOPP) oriented PP films. The latter are stretched lengthwise as well as crosswise, which causes a strong interconnection and therefore high tear strength of the material. At monta, we use BOPP films with a thickness ranging from 0,025 to 0,050 mm.

BOPP films are mainly used to manufacture conventional packaging tapes. They have a shiny surface and can be coated with all three adhesive technologies (hotmelt, acrylic and natural rubber). Depending on the composition and thickness, BOPP tapes suit various applications. When combined with natural rubber adhesive, they are often a more cost-effective alternative to PVC tapes.

BOPP tapes coated with hotmelt adhesive unwind very easily and are therefore perfect for machine applications. For UV-resistant tapes, BOPP film with acrylic adhesive is a good choice. BOPP tapes with longitudinal and cross-directional fibre reinforcement can be used for sealing extremely heavy cartons or packing hazardous goods.

BOPP and natural rubber
BOPP tapes with natural rubber adhesive are very temperature-resistant: After their application at room temperature, they reliably adhere to the carton even at temperatures as low as -30°C. Besides sub-zero applications, they are perfect for automatic packaging lines. Furthermore, monta developed special LowNoise BOPP tapes for use in office environments or other surroundings where a quiet application is desired.



A sustainable alternative to conventional BOPP films is used for our Greenline tape, monta reTec. By internally reprocessing a by-product from PP-film production, a valuable resource is utilized and given a new life as a sustainable alternative to conventional BOPP films. The need for virgin plastic is eliminated by ≥ 99%, resulting in a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to conventional BOPP tapes, yet offering the same technical performance. The coating with natural rubber adhesive makes monta reTec a reliable and sustainable choice for sealing medium-heavy to heavy cartons as well as for bag sealing.
