An effective, long-lasting carton seal depends on the adhesive tape's capacity to withstand tear stress. Particularly heavy cartons or loads present challenges on packaged goods during transportation.
An indicator for the tear resistance of an adhesive tape is called tear force. It describes the force which is needed to tear a tape strip. At monta, we measure the tear resistance in our lab.
To conduct a tear force test, also referred to as breaking load test, the outer layers of a tape role are removed. Then, five samples of a specified width are taken. Each of them is placed vertically into a testing machine which stretches each strip at a speed of 300 (+/- 30) millimetres per minute, until they reach their individual breaking point.
The average value of the test results describes the tear force, which is expressed by the force (N) and the width of the sample (millimetres). It varies depending on the thickness and the backing material (e.g. PVC, MOPP or paper). The tear force indicates the quality and uniformity of an adhesive tape as well as its ability to withstand stress once it is applied.
