Different adhesive tapes suit different applications. But how can you determine what type of tape you’re holding in your hand? It can be surprisingly simple. Just grab a pen.

The numerous adhesive tapes vary – amongst other aspects – in their carrier material. Most common are PVC, BOPP, MOPP, paper and PLA. These materials react completely different to the so-called pen test.

To execute the test, partially unroll the tape. Stress it by adhering the loose end e.g. on a table top while holding the roll. Use your other hand to quickly pierce a hole with a pen tip into the tape.

See the video here:

This test leaves a hole in PVC tapes, and only tears under a lot of stress. MOPP tapes tear lengthwise and stay strong, even under a lot of tension. BOPP, paper and PLA tapes immediately tear crosswise when tested.

The different reactions result from each carrier‘s viscosity: PVC is more viscous, PP films are rather brittle.
