Everybody knows the sound of unwinding packing tapes. But what causes this noise, and why are there big differences between the various types of tape?

Adhesive tape, when on a roll, naturally sticks to itself. When unwinding the roll, you mechanically break that bond between the adhesive and the backing material. This causes the typical noise you hear. With some backing materials (e.g. polypropylene) a release coat needs to be applied during tape production. This enables the unwinding of the roll but unfortunately increases the noise level.

There are various carrier materials and adhesive technologies, which can be combined in different ways for various purposes. This combination is one factor affecting the sound level of the unwinding tape. For example, PP-tapes with hotmelt adhesive unwind rather noisy. When using acrylic adhesive, an optional pretreatment process determines the intensity of the tape’s unwinding sound.

A perfect solution for quiet applications are monta’s LowNoise tapes, combining a BOPP carrier with natural rubber adhesive. Thanks to their special formulation, they unwind silently while creating a reliable carton seal. Another option, especially when an extremely strong adhesive tape is required, is the use of PVC tapes. Since they don’t need the mentioned release coat, they unwind very silently. Paper tapes also unwind very quietly whilst offering the benefit of a more sustainable packaging.
